In a relationship-driven industry like home building, growth happens through connection. The Greater Houston Builders Association (GHBA) Young Professionals Committee provides opportunities for emerging leaders to build relationships, develop professionally, and get more involved in the industry beyond their day-to-day roles.
We asked three Young Professionals Committee members: Byron Bimage, territory sales manager TX-LA for LP Building Solutions; Daniela Medina, director of land at D.R. Horton; and Ashley Leistad, land acquisitions coordinator for Perry Homes to share why they got involved and how it has impacted their careers.
Q: What initially motivated you to get involved with the GHBA Young Professionals Committee?
Byron Bimage – I initially got involved with the GHBA Young Professionals Committee because I wanted to connect with others in the industry who were motivated and looking to grow professionally. Houston’s building community is strong, and GHBA seemed like a great place to learn from people who had already been successful while also building relationships with peers who are on a similar path. I saw it as an opportunity to stay engaged with the industry and contribute to something bigger than just my day-to-day work.
Daniela Medina – I wanted to be more involved in my industry. I have a lot of colleagues and friends attending these events and it doesn’t feel like you are on a board. We all collaborate and enjoy spending time with each other building relationships with people who are around the same age.
Ashley Leistad – The industry is very big… yet very small, which makes finding your people all the more important. I’ve learned a lot from those with more experience, and I truly value that guidance. However, I also think it’s just as important to learn from your peers, the people who are figuring things out alongside you. I joined the Young Professionals Committee to meet people in the same stage of their careers, to connect, learn, and grow together in this industry.
Q: What’s one opportunity you’ve had through GHBA that you wouldn’t have had otherwise?
Byron BimagE – One of the biggest opportunities has been the ability to build meaningful relationships with people across the industry who I may not have crossed paths with otherwise. Whether it’s through events, committees, or community initiatives, GHBA creates an environment where collaboration happens naturally. Those relationships have led to valuable conversations, mentorship, and opportunities that extend well beyond the meetings themselves.
Daniela Medina – Being able to be on the board I’m able to see how committees are being ran – how to manage our budgets and provide events that are fun for new individuals to join. Being able to be more creative and planning events.
Ashley Leistad – Through GHBA, I’ve had the opportunity to connect and learn about multiple GHBA committees, specifically through co sponsored GHBA YP events. Those experiences introduced me to people who didn’t just offer guidance, but who actively pulled me into new circles within the GHBA. For example, because of my involvement with YP, I began learning more about the HOME PAC Committee and later met individuals who encouraged me to apply for their Emerging Leaders Program. I am now on the committee as a scholarship recipient, which is an opportunity I wouldn’t have had otherwise.
Q: What would you say to someone who’s thinking about getting involved but hasn’t taken the first step yet?
Byron Bimage – I’d say just take the first step and show up. Getting involved can feel a little intimidating at first, but GHBA is full of people who are welcoming and willing to help others get plugged in. The relationships you build and the knowledge you gain make it well worth it. The sooner you get involved, the sooner you start seeing the value it brings to both your career and your network.
Daniela Medina – Get involved however you can, even if you aren’t on a board just show up and I promise you, you will meet friendly individuals you can grow a relationship with.
Ashley Leistad – Just start by showing up! The more events you attend, the more people you’ll meet and the more connected you’ll feel. Those relationships grow naturally and often lead to deeper involvement in both GHBA and the industry.
The common theme is clear: involvement matters. In an industry built on relationships, stepping outside your immediate role can open doors, strengthen leadership skills, and create connections that last throughout your career.
