Say hello to some of GHBA's most active and influential members in this weekly spotlight. Follow along on social media for more.
🌟 This week, we’d like to introduce a GHBA Past President, John Williams with K. Hovanian Homes, our featured member for Membership Monday 🏡 Here's a peek into his journey:
🏠 How he got his start in the industry: John has always had a strong interest in land development and homebuilding, as many members of his extended family were involved in the industry. After gaining some experience in commercial construction and business operations, John relocated to Houston and decided to shift his focus to residential construction. Seventeen years ago, he joined K. Hovnanian Homes, eager to learn how large builders operate. Since then, he’s worked his way up within the company and continued to grow in this field.
👷 GHBA: John has been a member for 17 years but notes he’s been actively involved for about 14 of those years. A former boss and mentor encouraged him to attend educational events for professional development and networking. Not long after he started attending, John volunteered to speak at a Houston City Council meeting alongside other GHBA members. After a successful advocacy effort, John was impressed by the influence of the GHBA and committed to finding more ways to get involved.
As the GHBA’s 2019 President, John was honored to lead an organization he had been deeply committed to for years. Having already served four years on the Executive Committee, he approached his presidency with a clear vision for creating lasting impact. However, the most meaningful part of his experience was the opportunity to collaborate with an exceptional group of industry leaders, which left an even greater, lasting positive effect on him. John's involvement with the association began with a focus on Codes and Standards and the Young Professionals group. As his engagement deepened, he joined the GHBA’s Political Action Committee, HOME-PAC, and broadened his participation to include the Developers Council, the Dry Utilities Taskforce and the Government Affairs Committee. Over his tenure, he has served a cumulative nine years on the Board of Directors and spent 10 years as the GHBA-appointed Residential Code Chairman for the Houston Construction Industry Council. Among his honors are the Presidential Citation and the Young Professional of the Year award, both received in 2014.
💖 Passions: In his free time, John enjoys spending quality moments with his wife, Patricia, and their two daughters, Stella and Layla. His hobbies include hunting, fishing, and the occasional round of golf.
🤝 Charity Work: With two daughters, John actively volunteers for the Girl Scouts and the Bayou City Pony Club.
🏠 GHBA’s Impact: "Being an engaged member of the GHBA has been the single biggest catalyst for my professional development. The educational resources, combined with the powerful networking, are phenomenal,” John said. “The advocacy and charity efforts efficiently focus our collective energy and resources, delivering tremendous results."

We took a long, summer hiatus, but we are back to our weekly Membership Monday feature!🌟 This week, we’d like to introduce a long-time member, David Hodges with Kent Moore Cabinets. 🏡 Here’s a peek into his journey:
👷 GHBA: David has been a member since 2000. At that time, David worked for a small cabinet company that transferred him to Houston. His boss encouraged him to join the Greater Houston Builders Association and get involved. He hit the ground running and became immediately involved in the GHBA’s Associate Council, where he worked his way onto and up the volunteer leadership ladder and eventually served as president of the council. He has even received a Presidential Citation for Associate of the Year for his volunteer commitment. David has served on countless committees and councils over the years, including the Remodelers Council, the GHBA’s Bay Area Builders Association, Northern Counties Builders & Developers Division and more.
“I served on every board I could get on and made the GHBA my life,” David said. “My favorite charity activity with the GHBA was the Adopt-a-Family project. I was Santa Claus a few years – that was incredible. When a small child looks at you and truly believes you are Santa Claus – I’ll never forget that look.”
Today, David serves as a HOME-PAC Trustee at the Council Club level for his financial support of the GHBA’s Political Action Committee. David is also a 2024 Distinguished Member and serves on the Membership Committee this year.
💖 Passions: David has a wife, five children and 10 grandchildren who keep him busy in his spare time. “I build whatever my grandkids want,” he said. Most recently, David built his grandkids a big treehouse with an attached zipline in their backyard in Hockley. He also builds wooden swords for his grandkids whenever they ask, and right now, he’s building props for his grandkids’ school drama department.
🤝 Charity Work: Over the years, David has volunteered for HomeAid Houston, and he’s been involved with an organization called Celebrate Recovery for 15 years.
🏠 GHBA’s Impact: “Joining the association is the best thing I could have ever done for my career and for meeting good people and having fun – it has brought me opportunities. I’ve worked for several companies since I moved to Houston in 2000, and I’ve always been able to take advantage of the GHBA network for new job opportunities,” David said. “You won’t find better people than the people who work for the GHBA. If you want to serve, there’s plenty of opportunities to serve here.”

Membership Monday looks a little different today as we honor two veteran GHBA members, Randy Birdwell and the late Larry Johnson, for receiving the high honor of being inducted into the Texas Association of Builders’ 2024 Texas Housing Hall of Honor.
During Randy Birdwell's 40-year career in production home building, he pioneered the innovative "Custom Production" concept, and his leadership in reforming the Residential Construction Liability Act earned him the first Texas Association of Builders' Builder of the Year award in 1993. Birdwell served as GHBA president in 1996. Today, Birdwell serves as the chairman of Flintrock Builders.
Larry D. Johnson, a leader in community development, founded Johnson Development in 1967, creating nationally recognized master-planned communities such as Sienna, Riverstone and Fall Creek. By his passing in 2022, Johnson Development had expanded to 19 active communities across multiple states, with over 80,000 residential units and a legacy of preserving or planting 2 million trees.
Birdwell and Johnson will be officially inducted during the Excellence in Leadership Dinner on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at the Hyatt Lost Pines in Bastrop, Texas. Learn more about their impact on the homebuilding industry and their notable careers at ghba.org/news.
