Meet Nadine: GHBA’s New Communications Manager

adminBenefit Homes Project, Member News

Nadine Heffernan joined TEAM GHBA in February. As communications manager, Nadine will be responsible for implementing association-wide strategies for event promotion, issues advocacy and proactive media relations, while also managing the Benefit Homes Project and LEGO competition programs. She will also be handling social media for GHBA.

GHBA CEO Aimee Bertrand recently sat down with Nadine to ask a few questions and help members get to know the newest addition to the team. Be sure to stop by the GHBA offices and say hello the next time you’re in!

Aimee: Where did you grow up?

Nadine: I was born in Ann Arbor, MI (Go Blue!) and lived there for a good portion of my childhood. However, I also lived in Atlanta for a while and have now been in Houston for almost 20 years.

Tell us about your work before joining GHBA. What projects are you particularly proud of?

Prior to joining the GHBA I worked for a couple of organizations whose mission was to improve the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Helping those with IDD gain independence is something I will always be very passionate about, and I am thankful for the time I had in that world. At the same time, I’m excited to be part of a new and dynamic industry that also has a positive impact on the community.

Do you have a favorite memory from childhood?

I am half Nicaraguan, so some of my favorite childhood memories involve traveling down there to visit family. I always loved exploring the volcanic tide pools along the beach with my grandparents and finding things like sea urchins, octopuses, and mollusks! That’s also where I fell in love with surfing.

What made you decide to come to work for GHBA?

Over the past year, I have built some strong connections with the GHBA and had the privilege of doing contract communications work here this past summer. The culture and level of teamwork within the organization immediately stood out, and I knew I wanted to be a part of it if the opportunity arose. Sure enough, it did, and I’m excited to be joining an organization that plays such a significant role in the development of our city.

What events or projects are you looking forward to working on with the GHBA Team and why?

I am fortunate to be in a position that involves a variety of projects, but the one I am most looking forward to is the Benefit Homes Project. I believe in the importance of giving back to the community and I’m excited to be part of an initiative that positively impacts local families.

Do you have any pets?

I have a Golden Doodle with an energy level that I strive to someday possess. Someone once told me that every day is a party for Golden Doodles, and they were spot-on; she is the happiest girl.

What do you do when you are away from the office?

I’m a “Jill of all trades, master of none” when it comes to hobbies. Currently my focus is on barrel racing (horses). I’ve also practiced Jiu Jitsu for many years, and love surfing and rock climbing, as well. On the more creative side, I enjoy singing, making music, and creating art.

What is your go-to restaurant recommendation for out-of-town guests?

I have recommendations for every price point! If they’re looking for something on the higher end, I recommend something like Hugo’s or Rainbow Lodge. For a mid-range option, Niko Niko’s is always a top choice, but I often recommend a moist brisket at a local classic BBQ joint like Pinkerton’s. On the cheap, there’s nothing like a burger at Lankford’s Grocery & Market or some authentic tacos at Taco Fuego. The list goes on! Houston is such an incredible food city.

Is there anything else you would like to share with our members?

I’m excited to get to know everyone involved with the GHBA. Please feel free to come say ‘hi’ if you see me at an event; I would love to connect!
