Every opportunity holds potential, but it is consistency and enthusiasm that turn it into success. By joining an established association such as the GHBA, you are opening yourself to a community that not only advocates for the industry, but that can provide you with a wealth of experience, education, and strong foundational relationships. Whether you are a beginner, seasoned builder, or associate partner, you will gain a lot by surrounding yourself with people who understand your struggles, strive to help one another, and want to see you succeed.
I first joined the GHBA with the encouragement of a dear friend, John Williams. We started in this industry together as warranty guys, and as I was building Res Com Custom Builders with my business partner Paul Canady, I got to see John’s involvement and eventual presidency of the GHBA. Motivated by his hard work and success, I joined and have seen how much it has contributed to both our company’s growth and my own.
Getting Involved
As someone who joined the GHBA with a relatively young company, I understand how intimidating it can feel to be surrounded by established businesses and experienced professionals. That is why it is important to remain open—both mentally and socially—and simply take the first step. Start by participating in educational classes, signing up for luncheons that interest you, and attending events. Take initiative by asking those in leadership roles how you can contribute and become more involved. This approach is how I became involved with the Custom Builders Council, an opportunity that felt like an immense honor, especially since I had only been part of the GHBA for a few years at the time.
The CBC Mission
I’m excited to serve as president of the Custom Builders Council this year because it focuses on specific issues and topics we face in the industry. The mission of the council is to:
- Form an alliance among custom builders to achieve the highest level of professionalism and integrity.
- Offer our customers quality construction and excellent customer service in the industry.
- Provide continuing education to enhance our abilities.
- Provide an open forum for communication and exchanging ideas.
- Strengthening our political position to help our industry.
CBC Events
We fulfill this mission through luncheons with panel discussions, keynote speakers, and educational topics that are both relevant to our community and beneficial to all. Among our most notable luncheons is our Mental Health Series, started by our very own Chris Bolio, which received a national Award of Excellence from the Executive Officers Council of the NAHB—a legacy we are proud to uphold. We also organize the GHBA’s annual Homebuilding & Remodeling Expo—a great opportunity to attend on-site classes, explore over 100 exhibitor booths showing the latest products and innovations, and connect with industry leaders and peers.
Rally Day
Another unique, must-attend event is the biannual Rally Day at our state capitol. It is an eye-opening experience that showcases the full scope of what the GHBA is all about. Members have the opportunity to meet and speak with local and state representatives, as well as members of Congress, to learn how new ordinances or code changes could positively or negatively impact home building.
Giving Back
Getting involved with the GHBA has been one of the best decisions we have made for our business. Having grown from mentee to mentor, I know I still have much to learn from this experience and will continue pursuing ways to grow and strengthen the organization. By sharing my experience, I hope to inspire others to get involved and take an active role.
