In the GHBA Punchlist, Sherry Pruitt, 2024 PWB president and owner of Whodid It Designs and Remodeling, shares how she got her start, built a successful remodeling business, and what it’s like to be a woman in the building industry. “You can’t be afraid,” she says. “And if you are afraid, feel the fear, and then do it anyway!”

As we commemorate International Women’s Day Month, the Greater Houston Builder Association’s Professional Women in Building Council (PWB) is excited to announce a special upcoming event on April 25 featuring Dr. Dawn Buckingham, Texas Land Commissioner, as a guest speaker.

Dawn embodies the American Dream. Through hard work, a “never-quit” attitude, and perseverance, she has risen above her circumstances. Becoming a self-made small business owner employing Texans, serving others in her profession and as an elected official, she has always given back to her community.

In addition to this exciting opportunity, PWB is proud to announce a partnership with Spring Branch ISD to provide workforce training and career exploration opportunities for high school students. As part of this initiative, PWB members will have the chance to speak within Spring Branch Schools, discussing possible career paths within the building industry. One of the upcoming opportunities includes being asked to speak at a Senior job fair in May, highlighting careers within the building industry.

As we mark International Women’s Day, let us recommit ourselves to championing diversity, equality, and empowerment in our industry and beyond. Together, we can continue to build a future where all women have the opportunity to thrive and succeed.
