On Saturday, November 16, members of the Custom Builders Council (CBC) joined forces at The Hangar Unity Center in Brookshire, TX, for their annual charity project. This year, the focus was on constructing a concession stand for the soccer field, providing local students with hands-on experience in construction and teamwork.

A diverse group of volunteers came together for the project, including 12 CBC members (and a few of their kids, too!), six students from The Hangar’s trades program, and additional volunteers from the community. This collaborative effort underscored the power of mentorship and skill-sharing in fostering opportunities for local youth.

Brookshire, located in Royal ISD, faces challenges typical of rural areas with limited resources. The Hangar Trade Program, launched in 2022 by Eyes On Me Inc. and community donors, seeks to address this gap by providing trade education to local students. Courses in general construction, plumbing, and electrical work equip participants with practical skills, while also fostering teamwork, critical thinking, and leadership.

The concession stand project introduced students to a new aspect of construction: building a foundation. Starting from scratch, the team measured, dug, and leveled the ground before laying a gravel base donated by Hogue Landscaping Services. With lumber from The Detering Company, roofing supplies from Corey Construction and Residential Roofing Services, and plywood from Datasmart/Duncan Security, the group worked efficiently to frame the stand in just four hours.

This project builds on previous efforts, such as last year’s shed construction, which has since been transformed into a Crisis Intake Center. Over time, these projects have evolved from small-scale doghouses to larger, more complex structures, reflecting the growing confidence and capabilities of the program’s participants.

In a particularly rewarding moment, at least one student was offered a job on the spot, highlighting the real-world impact of this initiative.

The Hangar Trade Program continues to provide mentorship, community, and valuable skills to students from Royal ISD and neighboring areas, helping them build brighter futures—literally and figuratively. The CBC is proud to support this transformative program and looks forward to continuing their partnership in the years to come.
